Future Demand for Sustainability Experts
This article has been created for those of you interested in sustainability, the purpose is to inform you about the growing opportunities in the broad field of sustainability and the benefits these experts bring to organisations and wider society.
As the world continues to face the effects of climate change and the need to reduce emissions and improve sustainability, the demand for sustainability experts is projected to increase significantly. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimates that there could be 24 million green jobs created by 2030. Linkedin’s Global Green Skills report notes that the share of green talent in the workforce increased from 9.6% in 2015, to 13.3% so far in 2022 (a growth rate of 38.5%).Fig 1 shows a growing trend in developed countries’ hiring rates for green jobs from 2017.
What Factors will Drive the Demand for Sustainability Experts
“Demands for sustainability coming not only from investors, but also from consumers, supply chain partners, government regulators, and employees are increasing year by year. It is only logical to have sustainability experts sitting on the board of directors of a company.”
The awareness of the importance of sustainability continues to grow, and the demand for experts in this broad field will only expand. Organisations across all industries will need skilled professionals to help them navigate the challenges and opportunities of a more sustainable future. I have touched on 3 factors driving the demand.
With new regulations and initiatives being implemented to combat climate change, businesses will need to hire sustainability experts to help them identify areas of improvement and opportunities for growth. These green professionals will need to stay up to date with industry trends and regulations to ensure that businesses are kept compliant and in line with all relevant standards.
