When the UK coalition government came to power in 2010, they enacted a series of austerity measures on the nation to help reduce the significant government borrowing that ensued after the financial crisis of 2007–2009. One of the austerity measures to reduce costs was to reduce street lighting, by either keeping more lights off, dimming the active lights, and replacing lights with more efficient LED bulbs.

The street lighting reduction program resulted in a drop in carbon emissions, as well as saving millions of pounds for local authorities, according to a Telegraph article. Although the cost savings were the primary factor in the efforts taken by local authorities to reduce light usage.
