Technology is playing a key role in the global challenge of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. If we are to achieve humanity’s most challenging goal, we are going to need to rely on every technological advancement that is currently in existence and rely on some developments that are on the way. As well as the various methods technology is supporting a more sustainable future, it can also be used to monitor and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to develop new strategies for mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change.

Advances in technology that helps reduce emissions have come a long way in the 21st century alone, we do not need to travel back many years in time to see where renewables were less than 10% of the total energy mix, according to data from Our World in Data, it was 2013 when renewables reached the milestone of providing 10% of the world’s energy.

So here are 10 technologies that are playing their part in reducing emissions and supporting a more sustainable planet.

1. Solar Panels

A solar photovoltaic (PV) panel consists of many cells made from layers of semi-conducting material, most commonly silicon. When light shines on this material, a flow of electricity is created. according to the ‘Energy Saving Trust’ The cells don’t need direct sunlight to work and can even work on cloudy days, however they generate more electricity from increased direct sunlight. The electricity created from the panels can then be used to power a home or business, or it can be sent to the grid for consumption by other energy users. Solar panels are a clean, renewable source of energy that can help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

2. Wind Turbines

Wind turbines are machines that convert the kinetic energy of wind into electricity. The turbines consist of a tall tower with a rotor, or a set of propellor-like blades, at the top.
